What the heck is Yahoo! MASH?

Heard the rumours about the new social networking website from Yahoo!? Well, the rumours are almost all true!

Yahoo! have created a social network named Yahoo! MASH, and much like its predessesors it has its own advantages and pitfalls, but with any luck it will become just as big as the world's current #1 social network with millions of users worldwide, MySpace.

Yahoo! have created Yahoo! MASH as a mix of the best parts of the current networks; they've thrown MySpace, Facebook, and Wikipedia into a blender and created Yahoo! MASH as the result.

One of the main selling points of the community is the strange ability to edit other's profiles (Wikipedia comes to mind) by simply going to their profile and changing their MASH CSS codes, which allows them to change the layout, colors and images of the page. As well as changing the look of pages, users also have the ability to edit the content of someone's page. Of course, Yahoo! do allow the user to change their profile preferences to disallow the editing of their profile, but doing that would take away from the fun of MASH!

As a precaution, much like the Wikipedia system, Yahoo! allow any changes made to a profile to be 'undone' by the owner of the profile quite easily when they sign back in to their account.

A fresh new feature brought in by Yahoo! MASH is the MASH Pet. The MASH Pet is a module on the page that contains an image (a dull face by default) that can be changed by adding an image of your choice with MASH Pet Codes. The images change as the 'mood' of the pet changes, which happens when the Pet hasn't been fed or petted in a long time (or if you give it a smack). A number is shown next to the 'mood' of the Pet to inform people of its current state. The number decreases as the Pet's mood decreases, and increases when the mood increases. When the number hits zero the pet dies and must be brought back to life. With customizable Pets having to be upkept and managed, Yahoo! MASH might just be fun enough for the public to really get into and enjoy on a regular basis.

Yahoo! MASH is currently in a beta-release stage, meaning they are still working on improvements and are fixing any bugs still present in the system. As well as being in a beta stage, its also in an invite-only stage, where users have to be invited by other users before they can take part in the community. This will most likely be dropped once the community is released to the public.
